Susan Ellen Ellement died at age 55 on November 22, 2014 in her daughter's home in Santa Maria, CA.

Susan was born on January 12, 1959 in Montreal, Canada to Sheila Rose Healey and Charles Anthony Ellement. When Susan was an infant her parents relocated to California. Susan lived in the Los Angeles area until she was age 19. Susan then moved to Lompoc and remained a resident of Lompoc until she died.

Susan was a loving mother and grandmother. Susan was known for her sense of humor, loyalty to her loved ones and strength. Susan loved gardening, reading and loved watching the sunset. She was her happiest when surrounded by her family. Susan grew up with much adversity; her mother abandoned her when she was at a very young age and her father died when she was just 17. She had no other relatives to help her after the death of her father. Two years later, Susan started her life over in Lompoc only knowing one person when she moved here. At that time she was a young mother with one child; she worked several jobs to make it on her own. Susan worked in customer service for more than 33 years. Her work ethic was admired by many.

Susan battled lung cancer for over 3 years. Her courage throughout the process was mesmerizing. Family was important to Susan and the entire reason for her determination to stay with us as long as possible. Towards the end of Susan's journey she spoke to her family and close friends about quality of life. She made the courageous decision to die on her own terms and enrolled in hospice care. Susan died with dignity and surrounded by her loved ones. When Susan took her final breaths she was in the arms of her two daughters.

Susan is survived by daughters, Desiree Hooper and Jamie Chai, her son-in-laws Bryant Hooper and Russell Chai, her grandchildren Selena Orozco, Brayden Hooper, Riley Chai and Tyler Chai. She is also survived by James House (father of Jamie Chai) and David DeQua (father of Desiree Hooper), both strong men who were pillars of support for Susan during the last several years. Susan had a sense of peace knowing that the House Family would look after her daughters and grandchildren for her. Susan is also survived by her close friend Fidel Terrones, a friend that was always there for her no matter what and he made her journey more manageable, for this her family thanks him. Susan is preceded in death by her father Charles Anthony Ellement and her mother Sheila Rose Healey.

A memorial service for Susan will be held on December 5, 2014 at the Church of Christ 138 N. O Street at 2 pm in Lompoc, CA officiated by Roy Senior. A reception will follow the memorial service at the Providence Landing Clubhouse located at 699 Mercury Avenue in Vandenberg Village, dinner will be served.

Susan loved deeply and centered her life on her children and grandchildren. Susan was the matriarch of her family and she will be deeply missed. Susan believed her body was a vessel and that through death her soul would be freed and she promised her family she would look after them. She is now pain free and through her loved ones she will not be forgotten, her memory will be cherished always. Susan found a child cancer survivor as an inspiration who gave her strength in her challenging journey, in the mantra of Lilly Bumpus she would have told you "Everyday is a gift!" She would also jump at any opportunity to tell her children and grandchildren "I love you to the moon and back!"

In lieu of flowers for the family, the family has asked that a donation be made in Susan's name with the Lung Cancer Alliance at www.lungcanceralliance.org. It is lung cancer awareness month so join us in raising awareness. End the stigma. No one deserves lung cancer. It is not just a smokers disease, all you need are lungs, so we all should care.
