13th Battalion, Alexandra Princess of Wales Own (Yorkshire Regiment)

Buried: ACHIET-LE-GRAND COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Country: France

Grave: II. C. 9.

The second son of Cyril Ransome some
time Professor of History and Literature in the Victoria University, Leeds
and of Edith Rachel(nee Boulton), (Married in Wem, Shropshire in 1882, his wife, of Chapel Allerton, Leeds.
He entered the School in 1901 and left in 1905. Later in went into the firm of Messrs. Ballantyne and Hanson, Printers and Publishers.
He joined the Public Schools Corps in September. 1914 and received his Commission a month later in the 10th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment.
He went to the Front with them in September 1915 and was wounded in that month at Loos, where the Battalion suffered heavy losses. He was
wounded again severely near Armentiêres, in February 1916 doing volunteer duty, which nearly cost him his life. He was then attached to
the Second Training Reserve and received the rank of Temporary Captain.
In December, 1917, he returned to the Front attached to the 13th Battalion
and in January, 1918, was wounded again, but remained on duty.
On January 11th, while on patrol in the Cambrai sector he received another wound, of which he died in a Casualty Clearing Station at Achiet-
Le-Grand, on January 15th, 1918. Age 30.
Almost all the Officers with whom he had served had been killed and he had only just joined his new Battalion, but the following extracts will
show the high opinion in which he was held.
The Officer Commanding the 13th Battalion wrote :-
"He was wounded in bravely carrying out a difficult and dangerous duty, and, although he had a party of men with him, he went forward himself with his Sergeant rather than send his men."
His Major wrote :-
"Had your brother been spared, I have no doubt that he would have got his Company very quickly, as he showed great capacity and Was an excellent soldier.
His Captain wrote:-
"We knew him for all too short a time, though not too short for us to have found in him a true friend and a very competent Officer. I knew at
once that I had obtained a very able companion. His place indeed will be difficult to fill"
