Johanne Marie Hansen was born on November 22, 1862 in Bogense, Odense, Denmark to Hans Hansen and Maren Henricksdatter. He heard the teachings of the Mormon missionaries and embraced that faith. She come to the United States in 1898 and settled in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.

She married Jens Gunderson on October 26, 1898 in Manti, Utah and was sealed to him in the Manti Temple. To this union was born a son, Carl Erick Gunderson. After her husband died she married Nels H. Nelson in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. To this union was born three daughters, Frances Mildred Nelson, Elva Cecilia Nelson and Stella Denise Nelson.

While living in Denmark Johanne kept house as a domestic. After moving to Mt. Pleasant she became a farmer's wife and worked hard next to her husbands in the fields to make a living. About the time of World War I she and her family moved to a new farm in Granger (now West Valley City), Utah.

Johanne would spend the rest of her life in the Salt Lake Valley living with her three daughters. She loved her family very much and was a grand lady.
