Professional Tennis Player. A native of Guelph, Ontario, he was the World's Professional Badminton Champion from 1932 to 1945. Purcell began playing badminton at the age of 21, but lost his first professional game. From 1924 to 1929, he won every single title he competed in, mainly mixed doubles four consecutive times. He became the Badminton Champion in 1932 and stayed undefeated until his retirement in 1945. In 1950, he was named the Outstanding Athlete of the Half Century by the Canadian Press. Purcell passed away in 1991 at the age of 86. He was inducted into Canada Sports Hall of Fame in 1955.
