William Theophilus Abbott Sr. went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, after succumbing to a tragic fire in his home.

Mr. Abbott was born on St. Simons Island, Ga., on May 27, 1935, to the late Malcolm and Mildred Abbott. He attended Gillespie-Selden Institute in Cordele, Ga. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. On May 6, 1958, he married his beloved Tommie L. Williams. Together they had 5 children.

Mr. Abbott is survived by his daughters, LaTanya Abbott-Austin of Brunswick, Ga., Tammye Abbott of Woodbridge, Va., Tonye Anderson of Garden City, Ga., and Tracy Abbott-Sullivan (Ali) of Mableton, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Ebony Abbott of Brunswick, Ga.; two brothers, James M. Abbott (Hayistine) of Long Island, N.Y., Toney E. Abbott (Bonnie) of San Jacinto, Calif.; two sisters, Viola V. Abbott of St. Simons Island, Ga., H. Delores Murray of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sister in-laws, Minnie Williams of Paris, Texas, and Ruth Holt of Plano, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Tommie and son William Jr.

In the United States Navy, Mr. Abbott was stationed in exotic locales, such as Guam, the Philippines, California, Hawaii and Florida. Retiring after 22 years of service to our country, he returned to Brunswick, Ga., to raise his family. He began his second career at Georgia Pacific as a maintenance supervisor and eventually retired for the second time.
Public viewing will be from 2 to 7 p.m. in Prudence Hall Chapel of Hall, Jones and Brown Funeral Home located at 2005 G St., Brunswick, Ga., with a program beginning at 5 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at New Covenant Church at 2625 Reynolds St., in Brunswick, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross.
