William was the first of seven children born to Joseph Underwood and Mary Martin Edwards Whiteside. He first married Nancy Ann Scarbrough 4 Mar 1858 in Calhoun Co, AL. They had eight children: N. E.; Columbus Scarbrough who married Carrie Borden; Nancy May who married Charles Martin Black; Nevada; Linny Martha who married John Pelham Weaver; Eli Jay; Martin E.; and William Duncan who married Bessie G.

After Nancy's death in 1894, William married Nannie Heyatt. After Nannie's death in 1901, William married Julia Anna Morgan Black. Julia was his daughter's, Nancy's, mother-in-law. So Nancy's mother-in-law became her step-mother after her father's last marriage.

William is found on these US Censuses: 1850 Cathies Creek, Rutherford, NC; 1860 Ranges 8&9, Calhoun Co, AL; 1870 Township 15, Calhoun Co, AL; 1880 District 12, White Plains, Calhoun Co, AL; 1900 White Plains, Calhoun Co, AL; 1910 White Plains, Calhoun Co, AL.

William enlisted in the 31st Regiment, AL Infantry of the Confederate Army along with his brother-in-law, Alsalom B. Scarbrough.
