James completed four years of high school. In 1940 he worked as an assistant janitor in a public school in Ennis, Texas. When he enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 31, 1942, in Dallas his civilian occupation was listed as an apprentice to construction and hand trades.
He was killed in action in the China-India-Burma Theater of World War II.
