Richard L. Aukerman, 91, died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at home in his beloved Chilkat River Valley, Haines, Alaska.

He was born January 3, 1921 near Union City to the late Marshall and Elsie (Netzley) Aukerman. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and survived the sinking of his ship off Okinawa on April 12, 1945. After the war, he worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration in Alaska, eventually settling in Haines. He was a master carpenter and always had major projects underway. In his early years, he hunted and ran his dog team. Later he hunted only with his camera, and he shared his prized cherry tree with the moose he loved to have ambling over his property.

He was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially for firewood-cutting parties for those Haines people who no longer could bring in their own winter heat. He loved sharing his love of Alaska with visitors, and his wife never knew who or how many people he might be bringing home for dinner. Together they made a home well-known for warm hospitality and her wonderful meals. They were Aunt Wanda and Uncle Dick to dozens of youngsters through the years.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Wanda (Pegg); a son, Richard Duane (Cheryl) Aukerman, of Snoqualmie, Wash.; two grandchildren, Barbara Ann and Wayne Christopher; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marylin (Tom) Price of Union City, Ind., and Martha Hunt of Coldwater, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Alberta Aukerman of Union City, Ind.; and nieces and nephews by the dozens.

In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marsha Arlene; two brothers, Robert and Darrell Aukerman; and a sister, Lucille (Talbert) Wion.

Funeral services will be held in Haines, Alaska, at the family's convenience.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Haines Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 849, Haines, Alaska, 99827.
