George Emmet Coffey, known affectionately as Emmet, was born on June 22, 1902, in Grainger County, Tennessee. He was the son of James O'rlander and Orlena 'Elizabeth Jane' (Cope) Coffey. On February 9, 1996, at the age of 93, Emmet peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories.

Emmett's early years were marked by responsibility and dedication to his family. As the next eldest son, he selflessly took care of his parents' mutual Harrell-step-families, forgoing military service during both World Wars. He drove the first US Mail truck in Grainger County, a remarkable event that left a lasting impression on his siblings, particularly his sister, Aunt Ella.

Deeply rooted in his faith, Emmet professed his beliefs at Cedar Springs Missionary Baptist Church. He later worked with Bill Jackson at Logan Mills and joined his brother, Rev. Joe, in Ohio. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Bird Laughner, who hailed from an Amish background. They married and settled in Rosehill, VA, where they were blessed with two sons: Robert, Thomas, and a daughter Elizabeth Faye arrived when Emmett relocated to Kingsport, Tennessee, to be closer to family. He worked for the Kingsport News and in the dry cleaning industry. Their family expanded with the arrival of their fourth child, Stanley Joe, who was named after Reverend Joe. Emmet also spent some time working at the Lone Mountain Grocery's garage, where he had a narrow escape when a car he was refueling caught fire. Although he suffered a facial burn, his hearing remained intact, allowing him to continue playing beautiful music on his violin alongside his daughter, Elizabeth Faye, an accomplished pianist.

As a devoted father, Emmet supported his children's educational pursuits. He encouraged them to pursue higher education, with financial assistance from his sister Elsie and her husband Henry Clay Hayes. His sons, Robert and Thomas, completed degrees in Pharmacy and Mortuary Science, respectively. All three of his sons served overseas after being drafted following the Korean War. Faye graduated Draughon's Jr College, Janice attended Walter's State and James graduated LMU.

Emmett and Birdie saved diligently and eventually purchased 80 acres on Powell Mountain in the Springdale Community, where they retired. They led a simple and self-sustaining lifestyle, raising honey bees and cultivating organic fruits and vegetables and visited the grist mill to grind corn for their grass fed cattle. They took pleasure in fishing, enjoying the fresh water springs of the Appalachia and embarking on family vacations to the Smokie Mountains and visits to Florida.

In his later years, Emmet faced the challenges of Alzheimer's disease. Despite his struggles, he lived a remarkable life, nearing the age of 94. On February 6, 1996, Emmet peacefully passed away, joining his beloved mother, Orlena Jane and his father James Orlando, brother General and widowed sisters, Mrs. Else Hayes-Brogan-Jaynes and dear sweet Lillie Emily Sarah Elizabeth Dalton who preceded him in death. He was interred at Fairview Cemetery, leaving behind a profound impact on his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.

Emmett Coffey will forever be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to hard work, and his ability to find joy in life's simple pleasures. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
