"Funeral services for A.C. Overturf, 28 year old Denisonian drowned Friday morning in Red River at Baer's Ferry, were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at 309 West Munson Street with Rev. L.R. Lamb, Calvary Baptist pastor officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with Short-Murray funeral directors in charge. Mr. Overturf's body was retrieved from the river Friday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock after Denison firemen, officers, and other volunteers had dragged the stream several hours. The lifeless form was brought to the surface by Hugh Babb and Curtis Lane, the latter of the Short-Murray firm. The body was found about fifty feet downstream from the spot where Mr. Overturf sank beneath the grimly swirling water Friday morning about 3 o'clock when apparently attacked by cramps while attempting to swim across the stream after a boat. The water was more than seven feet deep in that vicinity. With Earl Burgess, Frank Stromer and Johnnie Turknett, Mr. Overturf intended to go across Red River into Oklahoma to pick grapes. He was swimming across the river to obtain a boat to ferry his companions across when the tragedy occurred. The body was brought to Short-Murray's funeral parlor and later removed to the home of his brother, W.H. Overturf, 309 West Munson Street. Mr. Overturf was born in Denison, Jan. 4, 1907, and was reared here. He was married to Miss Nellie Allen in Denison on Dec. 25, 1927. Surviving are his father, Charles Overturf, 518 East Elm Street, his widow, Mrs. Nellie Overturf; a 3 day old daughter; one brother, W.H. Overturf, Denison; two sisters, Mrs. W.C. Henley, St. Jo, and Mrs. H.B. Ragsdale, Denison, and other relatives."
