Edgar T. Springer, 87, Independence, Mo., passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his home.

Edgar was born May 14, 1918, in Springfield, Mo., the son of Thomas W. and Nellie I. (Gardner) Springer. Mr. Springer was a motel manager and owner/operator with his wife Mary, retiring in 1979. He was a World War II veteran with the United States Army, receiving a Purple Heart. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He loved to do woodworking, traveling and was a great story teller. Edgar was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Elizabeth Springer, in 1997, and a great-grandson, Jakie McConnell Springer, in 1999.

His survivors include two sons, Gary Springer Sr. and wife, Margaret, of Winter Haven, Fla., and Larry Springer and wife, Donna, of Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Connie Zuck and husband, Harold, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Donna Springer of Independence; two brothers, Wallace Springer of Springfield, and Charles Springer of Grain Valley, Mo.; 33 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, (816) 796-8600. Burial with full military honors will be in New Salem Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, Kansas City, Mo. 64114.
