Joseph Michael Schatz was born second son and child to John Firmage Schatz and Margaret Schatz on May 24, 1900. He joined older brother John J. Schatz (b. March 3, 1898) and would eventually become middle brother of three in 1906 when brother Walter F. Schatz was born.

Joe became employed at Bartlett Hayward Company in his teens and held the position of inspector by the age of eighteen. The company produced gas stoves and furnaces and would eventually be acquired by Koppers Company. Inc..

Joseph was a short man, barely five feet tall and of slender build. He had blue eyes and brown hair. He was a friendly affable man who was successful in business. Joe became engaged and wedded to Mae "Maida" Klaschus during the late 1920s. The marriage was childless. In the mid 1930s, Joseph's father John F. Schatz passed away leaving his mother living alone with disabled brother Walter F. Schatz.

Uncle Joe eventually became an employee of insurance Tongue Brooks Insurance Agency and secured a well paying position which allowed him and his wife access to life's finer things. Joe and his wife Mae enjoyed a lovely home at 5441 Valley Road in Catonsville, MD. until his death in December 1985. His wife followed him to the grave six months later. Joseph M.
