Times were tough for the new immigrants from Germany the first ten years in America. Her parents came to the U.S. with $200 in pocket which did not go far in supporting a family that would grow to nine by 1911. Father Heinrich had a difficult time and soon found himself in declining health. Ella lost his father at the age of seven in 1918 and her mother soon remarried a wealthier and much older man, Charles Henry Dontell, Sr. (b. June 9, 1852 who had become a widower in 1917 at the age of 65. The marriage provided Charles with companionship in his golden years and Ella"s mother and children with the stability of a middle class American home.
Upon adulthood Ella married Harry Bloom. She spent many years as a court stenographer in the Howard County MD Courts. She and husband Harry spent their entire lives living in beautiful Howard County, MD. Ella passed away in 1992 in Ellicott City, Maryland. She was eighty years old.
