Leslie Anderson, age 90 of Auburn, ND passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton.

Paul Leslie Anderson was born January 22, 1924 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Paul and Lulu (Simmons) Anderson. He grew up and attended school in Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School in 1942. Following his education he moved to San Francisco and studied with the principal clarinetist for the San Francisco Symphony and worked in the ship yards. He was drafted into the United States Navy in 1943 and served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He also played in the Navy Orchestra and was back up for Bob Hope. Upon his discharge in 1946 he moved to Long Beach, CA and played first chair clarinet for the Long Beach Orchestra and the Long Beach Elks Band. He moved back to Grafton and was united in marriage to Virginia Lykken on July 25, 1948 in Grafton, ND. In 1952, Leslie started Anderson’s Music Store in Grafton and was one of the founders of the New View Cable TV Company, the first in Grafton and Cavalier. In 1960 started farming near Auburn, ND. In 1975 he sold the music store and he retired from farming in 1989. Virginia passed away on April 3, 1996. He continued to make his home in Auburn until Jan. 22, 2013 when he moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home.

Leslie was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church where he served as director of the church choir for several years. He was a member of the Grafton American Legion Post and the Grafton V.F. W. Post. He served as director of the Legion Band and performed in the Grafton Clown Band. He also directed the community band on several occasions. Leslie started the Artists Series in Grafton in the 1950’s and they brought in several performers. Leslie also had a seven piece orchestra and performed in the area. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Lutheran Sunset Home Board.

He is survived by his children: Jeffrey Anderson, Wellington, CO; Janis (Mark) Friederichs, Golden Valley, MN; and Douglas Anderson, Auburn, ND; three grandchildren: Louis and Rose Friederichs and Alexandra “Sasha” Anderson. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and four brothers: Loren, Elvon “Buzz”, Vernet and Wesley.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 25, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Grafton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Interment will be at the Landstad Cemetery, Auburn, North Dakota.
