Kate Hooker was born to Robert James Hooker and Sarah Clayton Walpole in Gates, Lauderdale County, Tennessee, the fifth of six children. Her father passed away when she was only nine years old, and she continued to live with her mother until shortly before she married James Perry Lawrence in 1903.
Kate and James were married in the town of Curve in Lauderdale County. Their only child Alton would be born in the same town one year and four days later. After Alton's birth, the Lawrences moved to Memphis.
James and Kate bought a small house at 1481 Humber Street. Both lived in the house until their passing.

She was a charter member of Calvary Methodist Church and a teacher in the Sunday school junior department for many years. Her hobbies were art crafts and flower gardening, and her handiwork produced many beautiful things for her home and friends.
Besides her husband, a retired NC&StL car foreman, she leaves a son, Alton L. Lawrence of Memphis; a brother, H. C. Hooker of Fulton, Ky., and two grandchildren.
Services at 2 a.m. tomorrow at National Funeral Home, Rev. L. O. Hartman and Rev. Harry Williams officiating. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery."
