James Perry Lawrence was the middle of three children born to William M. Lawrence and Martha Jane Hoppers Lawrence of Crockett Co., Tennessee.

He married Catherine B. Hooker in 1903 in the town of Curve, Tennessee. One year later, their only child—Alton Lamar Lawrence—was born in the same town. Soon after, they all moved to Memphis.

James worked as a car foreman for the L&N Railroad, with additional employment with the Illinois Central and Rock Island Railroads. His combined railroad service totaled 41 years.

He was a Mason and member of Calvary Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing golf, and played until he was 85.
