Born Sept. 9, 1918, in Williamsport, Md., she was the daughter of the late William Richardson Garrett and Dollie Corinne Shank Garrett.
Verda was preceded in death by her husband, John Calvin Sword Jr., in 1979.
A member of Blairs Valley First Church of God for over 75 years, she taught Sunday school, and was active in the ladies Bible class and the Washington County senior center. Verda was always willing to help others in any way, and reached out to many through her card ministry. She was a very loving, caring and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and enjoyed spending time with her family. Working in her flower garden was a passion and enjoyment to her.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Carbaugh and husband, Roy, of Williamsport; Cathy A. Burger of Hagerstown, Md.; son, David Wayne Sword and wife, Beverly, of Greencastle, Pa.; grandchildren, Cori McDaniel and Jason of Greencastle, Brian Sword of Greencastle, James R. Mullen Jr. and Bridgett of Hagerstown, Debra L. Robinson and Fred of Williamsport, and Terry A. Stone of Sharpsburg, Md.; great-grandchildren, Dr. Andrea N. Stone of Frederick, Md., Patti L. Robinson of Williamsport, Ryan A. Stone of Rockville, Md., William G. Green Jr. of Hagerstown, Justin T. McDaniel, serving with the U.S. Air Force in Afghanistan, Ezekiel C. Mullen of Hagerstown, Jonathan F. Mullen of Hagerstown, Seth A. Mullen of Hagerstown and Geremiah M. Mullen of Hagerstown. She is also survived by numerous cousins and extended family members.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald James Sword and John Richardson Sword; and a son-in-law, Michael William Burger.
Services will be held Thursday, June 26, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. The Revs. Robert Stone and Kibreab Gudeta will officiate. Interment will follow at Blairs Valley Cemetery in Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Friends may visit the funeral home after noon.
