Rudolph "Rudy" Kaul, 60, of Lodi, Calif. died recently in a Lodi hospital from a gunshot wound Nov. 28. According to the coroner's reports, Kaul had just purchased the .22 caliber rifle for protection and was alone in his garage when his wife, Olivia, heard the shot. Mrs. Kaul told Lodi police a total of three shots were fired while she was in the house, but she thought her husband was testing the gun with the first two. After hearing what sounded like a "thump" following the third shot, Mrs. Kaul found her husband lying near a workbench in the garage with a bullet wound in the forehead. He never regained consciousness. County coroner deputies and Lodi police are investigating the shooting. Born in Ashley, Kaul attended Ashley schools before marrying Alvina Binder in North Dakota in 1937. He farmed in North Dakota until moving to Lodi in 1952. His first wife died in 1955. He was employed in California by the Southern Pacific Railroad for nine years and also did construction work. Kaul was last employed by the Claude Wood Construction Co. before retiring in 1970. He married Olivia Schwartz Hieb in Lompoc, Calif. in 1965. Survivors include his wife, Olivia; two sons, Roger Kaul of Lodi and James Kaul of Salinas, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Janice Ake of Manteca, Calif.; two step-sons, Larry Hieb of Salinas and Elroy Hieb of Spanaway, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Nitschke of Lodi and Mrs. Leona Roesler of Pierre, S.D.; one brother, Art Kaul of Ashley; one granddaughter and ten step-grandchildren. Funeral services were Dec. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Lodi Funeral Home, with Elder H. Shafer of the English Oaks SDA Church officiating. Entombment was at the Lodi Mausoleum. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Kaul, Clifford, Willys, Harry and Larry Nitschke and Robert and David Roesler. Soloist was Jill Roesler.
