Abram a resident of Auburn, IN. when he enlisted at age 26 at Waterloo City, IN, for 3 years in Company A. 88th Indiana Infantry. He was promoted Sgt. April 1, 1863 amd was discharged at the end of the war at Washington, D.C. on June 7, 1865. His regiment to part in the Battles of Stones River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain and Mission Ridge and following the fall of Atlanta, they were part of Sherman's March to the Sea.

He received an Army Invalid Pension beginning Oct 6, 1885 which he received until his death when it was converted to an Army Widows Pension for his wife Zitella which she received until her death on Oct 6, 1927. Zitella is also buried in Oakridge Cemetery.

When Abram died in 1903 he was listed as a painter by trade and resided with his wife at 23 Solon Place, Chicago, IL.

On the Illinois Roll of Honor he is listed twice, once as Canon and once as Cauen with the same grave location but in the Indiana Adjutant Generals Report he is listed as Abram L. Canon.
