A Life Remembered ~ George M. Blauvelt

The following information was contributed by Carole Nurmi Cummings, a Dutch descendant from the 1600s and a cousin.

George M. Blauvelt was born on the 29th of April 1863 in Clarkstown, Rockland County, New York to parents, John Howard Blauvelt and Caroline French Polhemus. John and Caroline had been married on the 2nd November 1845 in Clarkstown. At the time of his birth, his father was a silversmith, as was his grandfather.

This family descended from the Blauvelt family whose patriarch was Gerrit Hendricksen (Blauvelt)who migrated to New York in the 1600s. On 7 May 1646 Gerrit Hendricksen from Deventer, the immigrant ancestor of the Blauvelt family, married Marie Lamberts Moll in the Reformed Church of New Amsterdam [Manhattan, New York]. This is the first record of the Blauvelt ancestor in the North American Dutch colony of New Netherland. Evidence suggests that Gerrit first arrived in New Amsterdam with his relative, Captain Willem Albertsen Blauvelt, on the ship La Garce in 1641.

Though George M. Blauvelt was born in Rockland County, New York in 1863, by 1875 the family had moved to Brooklyn in Kings County, New York. Henry to George all born in Rockland County.

The family was still living in Brooklyn in the 1892 New York Census. Soon after, George met the love his life, Laura B. Johnston, a lovely girl born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1870. When they married on the 12th of November 1895 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, George's occupation was Milkman. In his marriage certifciate, he was 31 years old living on 795 Pacific Street, Brooklyn. Laura, 25, was living on 139 Jefferson in Brooklyn. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland with parents, James Johnston and Sarah A. Richardson.

As their love grew, a little son blessed this union. John Howard Blauvelt was born on 2 October 1897 in Brooklyn. He brought much joy into their lives. His father had been employed by the Reid Ice Cream Company for a number of years and this family thrived.

In the 1900 US Census, George, 36; Laura, 26; John, 2 were living on Vanderbilt Avenue in Brooklyn. George was in the Milk Business in this census.

The family in 1910 was still living on Vanderbilt Avenue in Brooklyn, George M., 42; Laura M., 38; John H. Blauvelt, 12. George was a Superintendent with a Milk Company.

In 1920, George, 56; and Laura, 48, are living together in Brooklyn. Their son, John H. Blauvelt is no longer with them. George was a foreman with the Milk Company.

By 1930, George, 65; and Laura, 56; are living at 1814 East Fifty-First Street in Brooklyn. George is a Manager in an Ice Cream Company.
