I have many great memories of visiting my great grandmother in her home at 2231 Garland Street in Eureka. She would serve us coffee (with lots of cream and sugar) even though we were young and over my mother's protests. She always had some homemade treat for us to dunk in the coffee. There were three beautiful lilac bushes at the back of the house so whenever I see or smell lilacs it brings back memories of her.
She came to live with us after a fall at home when I was about 9 or 10 and lived in our home until my mother was no longer able to physically care for her due to multiple strokes.
She liked to drink her coffee out of her saucer as it cooled the coffee to the right temperature and she always wanted "mush" (oatmeal) for breakfast.
Long ago childhood memories...
