Born to Ellison and Agnes Hamilton in York Dist. SC 3 Sep 1838. Married 13 Nov 1859 to Melinda Ann Moore at Picken Dist. Melinda was born 20 Oct 1837 to Daniel and Nancy Whitmore MOORE. They lived in Hall County, GA and 4 sons were born to them all during the civil war. William D. F; Joseph Alexander; Green Berry Joshua and John H. Hamilton. They migrated to Madison county, AR from GA by going up the Mississippi River. A daughter was born at Pettigrew, 1875 and a son Craig about 1876.
The family rumor has it that they gave the land for the cemetery at Boston. Here they are both suppose to be resting. James died between 1886, when he filed land patents and Melinda finished them in 1892.
The Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton Cowan buried here is their only daughter,
