Maria is a daughter of Jens Peter Mortensen and Inger Nielsen. She was born third of their six children. Her siblings are Hans Peter, James Peter, Emma Inger Margret, Hyrum, and Martha Ann. Her parents were immigrants from Denmark. They lived in Hyrum, Utah.
Maria married James Peter Mortensen on January 2, 1890. They moved to Salem, Idaho. There they became parents to nine children: Carrie Inger, James Leland, Mira, Estel Peter, Cleova Hannah, Forland Hyrum, Myra, Esther Marie Margrethe, and Annes Gilmore.
James was a rancher and farmer. Maria tended the home and the children.
James died in 1939. Maria carried on until she died of heart problems.
