Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22 at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Jerry A. Johnson, 74, of Hokes Bluff, who passed away Friday, August 19, 2011. The Revs. James O. Wallace and David Jones officiated. Burial followed in Crestwood Cemetery.
Born in Akron, Ohio, Mr. Johnson was a two-pound preemie. He fought to live then and fought to the end surviving various surgeries and illnesses.
Mr. Johnson worked part time as a bag boy/cashier at Winn-Dixie during high school and worked his way up to management. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He worked in the grocery business for more than 50 years. He was employed as a jailer with the Etowah County Sheriff's Department for four years. He served as president of the Hokes Bluff Lions Club; on the Hokes Bluff Water Board; Hokes Bluff Zoning Board; and president of the Hokes Bluff Band Boosters for years, even after his daughters were out of school. He loved to read, hunt and fish. Mr. Johnson graduated in 1954 from Piedmont High School where he played football. Jerry, as he wanted to be called, made friends easily and always greeted them with a big smile and a joke. He may have nothing more than for them to be with him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Hycie Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Slaughter Johnson; four daughters, Sharon (Jimmy) Carnes, Ange (Richard) Tidwell, Pam (Hollis) Cherry, and Emily Ingram and Bob Ammenheuser; three granddaughters, Jennifer Conaway, Katie Fleming and Ashley Cherry; brother, Don (Linda) Johnson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Hank Wells, Johnny Preston, Danny Johnson, David Johnson, Ted Acker, Tommy Diamond, Barry Conaway and Gene Tierce.
Honorary pallbearers were Bud Goss, J.W. Smith, J.W. Griffith, Peter Gregerson, Earl Acker and Charles Acker.
