Katherine Frances McInturff McCrea "Kitty," 96, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, VA. Kitty was born on August 23, 1915 in Middletown (Frederick County), VA. She was one of four children and the only daughter of William A. McInturff and Florence F. Willey McInturff. Born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Kitty and her brothers worked on the family farm until graduation from high school, at which time she left the Valley to work in Williamsburg, VA. While there, she met her future husband, Hugh Clifford McCrea. Upon his return from service in the Army during World War II, Kitty and Cliff were married in Richmond, VA on June 29, 1946.

Kitty raised and cared for her family in Richmond and Mechanicsville where she was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. In early 1990, she moved to Lynchburg, VA to live with her son and his family. Her granddaughters, Meredith and Kate, were blessed to have "Grandma Mac" as such an important part of their lives. While in Lynchburg, she made a new set of friends, particularly through Centenary United Methodist Church. Kitty will always be remembered as a loving mother, wife, aunt, grandmother, and friend. She was a kind and gentle woman who always put others before herself. An excellent cook whose Christmas pound cake was well-known, Kitty was also an accomplished gardener, no doubt a love acquired from her years growing up on a farm.

In addition to her parents, Kitty was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Clifford McCrea and her brothers James McInturff and his wife Edith; Fred E. McInturff and his wife Bert; and John E. McInturff. She is survived by her son, H. Clifford McCrea, Jr. and his wife Mary Kay Meredith McCrea of Lynchburg, as well as two granddaughters, Meredith Benson McCrea of Memphis, TN and Katherine Hunter McCrea of Lynchburg. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Norma M. McInturff of Strasburg, VA and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was particularly close to her nieces Jane M. Pugh and husband Danny of Richmond and Vicki M. Pierotti of Goochland. Their love and attention over the years was unsurpassed.

The family wishes to express a special appreciation to the staff on the 5th and 6th floors of Drinkard Health Care at Westminster Canterbury for such kind and loving care during Kitty's two years there. Kitty will be buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Friday, May 18 with a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers or other gestures of kindness, memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Fund at Westminster Canterbury, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, VA. Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, 434-237-9424, is assisting the family.
