WILLIAM A. FORBES
William A. Forbes,82 years old, retired, who was for several years one of the best known business men of Greenfield, conducting a dry goods store, died Monday evening in his home, 102 Federal street, after several of impaired health. For 25 years Mr. Forbes was vice-president of Greenfield Saving bank and at age 70 had served the bank as a director for 27 years. He soon retired after. He was a director of the Conway bank earlier life as well as a director of Greenfield Gas company in his time. While connected with the Greenfield bank he was a member of the investment board and very familiar with real estate values of of the town. He was a Democrat in politics and elected (two lines unreadable).
He came to Greenfield in 1860 from Buckland, where he was born where May 13, 1836, the son of William Forbes, and the grandson of Edward Forbes, who serves in the Revolutionary war and was one of the minute men at Concord and Lexington in April 1775. He entered the employ of T. D. Root & Co., in the dry goods business when he first came to town and for six years was a partner in the firm which was conducting business in the Sanborn block, know today as the Levy,s block. In 1873, when the Pond block was built, he opened a dry goods store and this he conducted until 15 years ago, when the business was taken over by his son, Frank P. Forbes, now of Springfield who continued with it for a few years. Mr. Forbes married Miss Eliza Prentiss, daughter of Jarvis and Mary Wells Prentiss of Greenfield on March 17, 1863, who died August 29, 1901. He leaves his son and five grandchildren and one great grandchild a sister, Mrs. Carlos Batchelder of Conway, and a niece, Miss Mary Wells of Greenfield. Thee funeral was held Wednesday afternoon in St. James Episcopal church, Rev. J. B. Whiteman officiating and burial was in Federal street cemetery. Members of the family were bearers.
