Born in southern Louisiana to Margaret Borne and Adam Smith. Within 5 years her parents divorced. Her adoptive father, Louis Bartet, a restaurateur, trained her and employed her, in her youth. She became an excellent cook, of the Creole school. Much of her knowledge and skill she passed along to her children.

Gloria and Dan lived in east Tennessee after World War IIwhile Dan earned his undergraduate degree via the GI Bill. He trained in optometry. Until prevented by her health, Gloria worked with her husband in his practice.

She was preceded in death by son David, and survived by her husband, her daughter Dayna, her son Dan IV, a grandson and a granddaughter.
