The son of Isaac & Augusta Emma (Lutz) Shumaker, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living in Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 22, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 28 as a private with Co. H, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

He married Mary B. DeHaven and fathered Emma Susan (b. 09/25/61 - married Joseph Carns), Willian Newton (b. 10/18/64), and Anna Mary (b. 03/30/72 - married Edward E. Long). He retired from the occupation of miller and died from "cardiac asthma."
