Ida Maurice Akery, 70, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 surrounded by her children, grandchildren and loved ones. Maurice is survived by her former husband and best friend, Daniel Akery, of Austin, TX; her daughter, Gena Danielle and son-in-law Bobby Pounds, of Austin, TX; her son, Stephen Akery of Austin, TX; her grandchildren, Danielle Pounds, Madelyn Pounds and Benjamin Pounds, of Austin, TX; and many other friends and family.
Maurice was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan Maurice and Viola Johnson, of Clifton, TX and brother Joe Wayne Johnson, of Cleveland, TX.
Maurice Johnson was born July 12, 1943 in Clifton, Texas. Affectionately known to her family as "Snappy", Maurice spent her younger childhood in Houston, Texas. She had many fond childhood memories here that include tagging along behind her big brother, Joe whom she idolized. Her family moved to Marshall, Texas her 9th grade year and she graduated from Marshall High School. The next fall, Maurice moved into Gibbs Hall dormitory and attended college at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX majoring in Early Childhood Education. It was at Stephen F. Austin she met her future husband, Daniel Gene Akery. Maurice graduated with her undergraduate degree at the same time Dan graduated with his Masters of Education. The couple wed on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1963 and settled in Vidor, Texas. Dan's career brought them to Austin, Texas in 1968, where they made their permanent home. The same year they welcomed their first child Gena Danielle Akery and five years later, their son, Daniel Stephen Akery.
Maurice had the pleasure of teaching several grades in several elementary schools throughout her career with the Austin Independent School District. Early in her career Maurice went back to school and earned her Master's Degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Throughout her career as well as her membership at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Maurice made life-long friends, many of which are here today. Maurice's greatest joy and center of her world were her two children Gena & Stephen and her grandchildren, Danielle, Madelyn and Benjamin who knew her only as "Momo". She took pride in all of their accomplishments and nothing made her happier than being in their presence.
Throughout their marriage and beyond Maurice and Dan stayed very close. They continued an unbroken friendship and took care of each other in numerous ways. They enjoyed babysitting grandkids together, holidays and everyday events. Dan brought Maurice back into his home over the past few months to care for her after health issues kept her from living by herself. They truly held an unusual but wonderful relationship.
From birth to the present, Maurice kept strong ties with her brother Joe. Her beloved brother passed away only one week before she did. And much like she did in her young childhood, Snappy took Joe by the hand and followed him Home.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 24th at Woodlawn Baptist Church at 4600 Manchaca Road with funeral services immediately following at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Cook Walden/Forest Oaks Cemetery at 6300 W. William Cannon Drive in Oak Hill.
