Davenport Leader (Davenport, Okla.), Thursday, November 3, 1904
DEATH.
H.M. Wilson received a message a week ago Saturday morning bearing the sad intelligence that his mother was not expected to live at her home at Haven, Kas. He left in the afternoon for her bedside and learned that she died before he got the dispatch. The funeral was held on Tuesday and Mr. Wilson returned home on Thursday. All of the children were present except one daughter who lives in California.
The Haven (Kas.) Weekly Journal has this to say of the deceased:
Mrs. Melissa Wilson whose maiden name was Barton, was born July 28, 1824 in Nox county, Ohio. At this place she spent her childhood days and grew to womanhood. She was married to Andrew J. Wilson on December 10, 1843, to them six children were born, three boys and three girls, of which all are living, the youngest being 42 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson moved from Ohio to Kansas, on the 22nd day of June 1872, when this country was new. They battled with the waves of hard times and stayed on their homestead, but in the year of 1876 on the 2nd day of February the death angel came and took her faithful husband. On Saturday morning the 22nd day of October 1904, death came to her, only a half mile from where she settled when she came to Kansas. She leaves thirty-two grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss.
