Sohayl Hannen, 92, Glenview, IL

Sohayl (Soey) Hannen was a staunch supporter of activities at the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, and the grandson of two of the earliest members of the U.S. Baha'i community.

With three generations of Baha'i descendants to his own credit, Soey passed away July 15, 2011.

A letter of condolence from the U.S. National Spiritual Assembly to his children says in part, "While sorrowing with you in the absence of his physical presence, we join you in celebrating his innumerable dedicated services to humanity and to the Faith of Bahá'u'lláh — chief among these the raising, together with your mother, of five children — each of you now wonderful people and steadfast Baha'is in your own right."

Soey was a grandson of Joseph Hannen, honored as a Disciple of ‘Abdu'l-Baha, and Pauline Hannen. Both were among the earliest Baha'is in Washington, DC, and were visited by the Master in 1912.

Soey was born in April 1919 on the evening his grandfather took part in the unveiling of ‘Abdu'l-Bahá's Tablets of the Divine Plan at a national Baha'i convention in New York City.

He grew up in the Evanston/Wilmette area. His parents, Carl and Mineola Hannen, were founders of the Baha'i community in Glenview, just a few miles west of the House of Worship.

After wartime service in the Navy, Soey married Frances Ogle and worked for many years as a plumber. For numerous years he was a member of the Baha'i House of Worship Ushers Committee. Settling in the Glenview home his parents had built, he and his wife were pillars of the community and hosts of many gatherings and activities to share the teachings of Baha'u'llah.

Sohayl "Soey" Hannen was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Frances Hannen nee Ogle. He is survived by their five children; Jim (Nancy) Hannen, Judy (Bruce) Moe, Linda (Mike) Hawkins, Bob (Cheryl) Hannen and Peter (Julie) Hannen; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and his sister Barbara Griffin and brother Joe Hannen.

Sohayl was an active member of the Baha'i Community, a retired plumber, an avid fisherman, a hunter, and gardner.
