GROSS, EMERY DUANE Emery Duane Gross, 92, died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn (Clawson). Although he was 92, until very recently, Emery lived independently, drove his Cadillac around town for errands and went to shows and on trips with his friends from the Pittsfield Township senior center. By far, the biggest joy in his life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Emery was born on January 13, 1927 in a farmhouse in Wheeler, Michigan to Dewey and Lalah Gross (Smith). During his early life, he worked on the family farm. He played baseball and softball and enjoyed going to square dances and the annual Ionia Fair. He graduated from Ithaca high school in 1945 and was almost immediately inducted into the US Army. He served as a quartermaster in Italy during the post War World II occupation. After serving his country, he returned home and attended school to become an electrician. He married Evelyn Clawson on October 3, 1948. They moved to Montrose, Michigan, bought a home, and raised their two daughters. Emery was a hard worker, often working seven days a week, as an electrician employed by General Motors. He was very interested in politics and was a staunch supporter of the working man. Emery was an accomplished master electrician and was able to build or fix anything at home or at work. After retirement, he and Evelyn moved to Ann Arbor to be closer to their grandchildren. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, taking them camping and teaching them to fish and helping to take care of them. Also, with his wife Evelyn at his side, Emery explored the entire world, reaching many exotic locations including China, Russia, Egypt and Australia. He was kind, generous and calm, except when talking politics, which could lead to some loud, but good-humored, arguments. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 16th, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM at Barden's Funeral Home, 225 W. Center Street, Ithaca, Michigan. This will be followed by a light luncheon at Lafayette Presbyterian Church, 8026 E St Charles Rd, Ithaca, MI. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the Emergency Medicine Staff, the Stroke Team, the Neurosurgery team and all of the caregivers on the 4A Stroke Unit at the University of Michigan who were so kind during this difficult time.
