DAVENPORT — Samuel Lipsman passed away peacefully on June 13, 2013, after a seven-month battle with cancer. Sam, son of Victor and Zita Lipsman, was born on May 3, 1949, in Davenport.
He attended McKinley Elementary, Sudlow Junior High and Central High schools. He was also a graduate of Princeton University and attended graduate studies at Yale University. He called himself an ABD – all but dissertation.
To say Sam was brilliant is an understatement. He was a straight "A" student through his K-12 years and was valedictorian and president of his 1967 Central High graduating class.
Sam received a National Merit Scholarship to Princeton and a scholarship offered by Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company. As a graduate student at Yale, he was a Fulbright Scholar in both West Berlin, and he became the first Fulbright to do research in East Berlin.
Sam decided not to become a professor, but he loved to lecture. He was knowledgeable on a wide range of topics from baseball (White Sox), football (the Bears), history, law, economics, politics and just about anything else.
As a gay man, his only regret was not finding a life partner. Instead, he was loved by his family and his many friends, ranging from those he met in kindergarten, through high school, college and throughout his work career.
Sam was a writer and series editor of the Time-Life series on Viet Nam. He worked for several magazines before deciding that it was warmer in California than Boston. After moving to Los Angeles, he eventually became the publisher and editor of LA Lawyer, a publication of the Los Angeles Bar Association. He held that job until his death.
Sam will be remembered for his wit, his caring nature, and his love for family and friends.
He is survived by his stepmother, Frances Lipsman; his loving sisters, Paulee Lipsman and Roberta "Robbie" Lipsman (Eric Wright); his nephews, Joshua and Doug Wright; and his great-niece, Harper Flinn. He is also survived by his aunts, Florence Lipsman and Jeri Lipsman; uncle, John Meade; and many cousins, especially Bill Lipsman, who was more like a brother; and their children.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Burial will be at the Tri-City Jewish Cemetery, in Davenport, a section of Fairmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tri-City Jewish Center (Congregation Beth Israel) in Rock Island, or the charity of your choice.
