Heiress Elisabeth Mannering Congdon was the youngest daughter of Chester and Clara Bannister Congdon. The Congdons were a wealthy Duluth Family, who built the famous Glensheen Mansion; which has been seen on A&E American Castles.
Glensheen was made famous by the brutal murders of Elisabeth Congdon and her private nurse, Velma Pietila (FAG Memorial# 102809523), in the early hours of June 27, 1977. The murderer was the husband of Miss Congdon's eldest adopted daughter, Marjorie.
While lying asleep in bed and suffering with paralysis from a previous stroke, Elisabeth Congdon was smothered to death by her son-in-law, Roger Caldwell, with the use of one of the pillows from Miss Congdon's bed.
Miss Congdon's nurse, Velma Pietila, was viciously attacked and murdered on the middle landing of grand staircase, her body found on the staircase windowseat.
On the landing going up the stairs of Glensheen, one can still see traces of what is believed to be traces of Velma Pietila's blood, located on one of the heating vents located under the windowseat.
