Friends called him Romie in his younger days. His father Ezra died when he was 14, a few days after a train whistle spooked the horse hauling the wagon he was driving.

In 1892, Jerome decided to relocate the family to Chicago from rural Iowa so he could attend dentistry school. The family lived in Little Italy, a rough neighborhood at the time where many Italian immigrants lived.

They lived in the city during the events surrounding the World's Fair — known as the Columbian Exposition — including serial killer H. H. Holmes and the assassination of the mayor. These and city life are well-documented in the book Devil in the White City.

After finishing dentistry school, the family left Chicago for rural Henry County, Iowa.
