Funeral services for Royce L. Stephenson, age 82 of Jasper, Texas will be 10am Monday, June 3, 2013 at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper.

Burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Royce passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2013 surrounded by family in his home.

He was born in Jasper to Wilma Euleen Orton and William Jennings Stephenson on August 19, 1930. Royce was the third of five boys, born in the early throws of the Great Depression.

Royce spent his childhood in the Curtis community where his father owned a country store complete with a pickle barrel. Royce began working for his father at an early age butchering cattle for the store's meat market, making grocery deliveries, re-stocking shelves and sweeping up after closing. Royce entered the first grade and graduated from Beech Grove School where he excelled as a lineman on the high school football team. As a young adult, Royce competed as a successful Golden Gloves Boxer.

In 1949, the rough and rugged Royce softened as he married Fay Hardy Stephenson. Soon after they married, Royce and Fay moved to Beaumont, Texas, where Royce worked at Oxford Lumber Company as an apprentice. The couple then moved to Winnie, Texas, where Royce co-owned and operated Chambers County Lumber Company. By the time the couple made their final move to Jasper in 1967, they had been blessed with 4 sons. At one point after moving back to Jasper, Royce juggled three careers to provide for his growing family: general contractor for Jasper Investments, broker/owner of Stephenson Real Estate and a licensed appraiser. Royce helped develop Ryall Acres and Walnut Run Additions in Jasper. Royce retired in 1990 and lived out his days in the home designed and built by blueprints drawn by he and his late wife, Fay Hardy.

Royce coupled his interest in real estate with his amateur writing skills to pen a number of articles for Texas Realtor Magazine. In 1991, he again took pen to hand and wrote Country Store Days a compilation of true short stories detailing events from his youth.

As with many of his generation, one of his true loves was quiet talks on the back patio with family.

Survivors include four sons, Royce Reagan Stephenson, Kit Hardy Stephenson, both of Jasper, Chris Edward Stephenson of Vidor, Texas, William Kirk Stephenson of Lufkin, Texas, four brothers, William Jennings Stephenson, Jr., Robert Marshall Stephenson, Larry Jean Stephenson, and Glover Wayne Stephenson, five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Fay Hardy Stephenson, mother Euleen Orton Stephenson, father William Jennings Stephenson and granddaughter Heather Fay Stephenson (FAG mem 44124695).

Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper.
