Services for Rush Wheeler, 88, of Lubbock and formerly of Slaton will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010 in Slaton's First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Campbell and Mary Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

Rush was born on May 23, 1921 in Eustace, TX where he graduated from high school in 1939. After graduating, Rush attended North Texas University and Trinity University. He served in the US Army in Korea.

Rush married Rose DeWees on September 14, 1940 in Wills Point. Rose preceded him in death on September 17, 2002.

He worked for J C Penney for 22 years retiring in 1963. Rush then became Post Master in Slaton until he retired in 1984. During this time, he and Rose began Slaton Care Center. After their retirement they moved to Lubbock in 1991.

They previously lived in Floydada until 1957, when they made Slaton their home. He had served as Floyd County Chairman of the American Red Cross. He was very active with the Slaton's FUMC and served as choir director for many years, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and Little League.

He served on the Lubbock County Appraisal Review Board and as its secretary.

Rush was co-owner with his son, Mike, of Golden Age Nursing Home until his death.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Burena Monroe.

Rush is survived by his sons, Mike Wheeler and wife Shirley, Pat Wheeler, all of Lubbock and Bill Wheeler and wife Mary of Mesquite; brothers, Houston R. of San Antonio and Cockerell of Houston; along with 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
