ELIZABETH REED WAIDNER, age 86, of Palm Beach Gardens, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 16, 1917, third child of Bessie Moorhead Reed and Captain Allen Bevins Reed, Sr. Elizabeth grew up in Washington, DC and received her early education at Washington Cathedral School and Western High School. She was a graduate of Smith College, Class of 1939, from which she received her BA degree. She was a direct descendant of Joseph Reed who served in the American Revolutionary War. As Betty Reed she married Lane C. Kaley. They lived in Washington, DC, Wilkes Barre, PA, Seattle, WA, and finally settled in Summit, NJ when her husband was finished with his naval service in World War II and the Korean War. Betty did extensive volunteer work in Summit through the Junior League of Summit, Children's Theater and many others. She was a member of the Summit Garden Club and the Smith College Club. In her Summit days she enjoyed paddle tennis, bridge and dancing. She was an excellent and supportive mother to her three children. Her husband passed away in 1970. Betty Reed Kaley remarried to Clement M. Biddle in 1974 a longtime Summit resident where they continued to reside. They enjoyed traveling and did an extensive trip when he was a board member of the Bank of Tokyo. They split their time between Summit and Lost Tree Village, Florida., eventually moving permanently to Florida. Mr. Biddle passed away after a long illness. Betty Reed Kaley Biddle was then fortunate to fall in love for a third time with Robert A. Waidner, a new resident of Lost Tree Village and also of Baltimore. They were married in 1985 and split their time between their two houses until they moved permanently to Florida. They enjoyed golf, bridge, friends and traveling. Bob Waidner passed away in 1999. Betty moved to Devonshire at PGA National and continued to play bridge with her friends and visit her family in Colorado. In February, 2003, she spent two weeks in Auckland, New Zealand with her daughter, son and family. She had a joyous time including sailing for three days on a 46ft sailboat and anchoring out at night in the Bay of Islands. This was a lady who had been on dialysis three days a week for six years. She was an amazing lady and a terrific Mom. No matter where she lived her children and grandchildren were welcome to visit (and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean). She is survived by daughters, Linda Erkelens (Ronald Dion) of San Francisco, CA. and Auckland, New Zealand, Prudence Kaley (Mark Goldrich) of Ft. Collins, CO. and son, Lane C. Kaley, Jr. (Ann) of Fort Collins, CO. and nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Captain Allen Bevins Reed, Jr. of Marco Island, FL. and her sister, Annis Reed Burroughs of Arlington, VA. A Memorial Service was held in Florida and an Internment Service at Calvary Episcopal Church. The TORSK was christened in 1944 by Betty Waidner's mother, Bessie Reed at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard, in NH.
