Joseph was born in Scribner, Nebraska, USA the eldest son of Mary nee Anthony and Albert Kirstein. During his childhood the family to Fairview, Madison, Nebraska and Spencer, Boyd, Nebraska where his father farmed. On the 22nd of February 1927 Joseph married Elizabeth Borgemeir born Feb 14 1908 at the St Boniface Church in Elgin, Nebraska where they lived for some years. Later they moved to Oregon, and then joined the rest of the family in California. Joseph was a carpenter and passed away on the 24th of February 1943. Elizabeth then married Warren Simpson of Delano, California.

Joseph and Elizabeth had seven children:
Dorothy Marie Kirstine Diesel 1927-
Marlene Kirstine Ryder 1938-
Shirley Kirstine Upton 1939
Shirley had a twin sister who died at birth.
Three boys also died in infancy.
