SPRINGFIELD - Richard R. Grummon, 86, of Springfield and Manitowish Waters, Wis., died May 22, 2005, at his home in Springfield after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Camp Point, the son of the Rev. Arthur Ray and Mary Longdon Grummon. He married Evelyn Walters in 1942. A son, Timothy Walters Grummon, preceded him in death.

Mr. Grummon graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Lincoln College of Law in 1951. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He worked for the Illinois State Bar Association and operated a general legal practice, specializing in personal injury-related issues.

He was a member of the Springfield Board of Education, serving as president from 1958-60; the YMCA for 45 years, serving as president and secretary of the board; and Sangamo Club. He was a charter member of World Peace Through Law and World Lawyers Association and founding member of the World Affairs Council of Central Illinois. He served as chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Chapter of Boy Scouts of America and on the boards of the Springfield Mental Health Association and Goodwill Industries.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn; daughter, Rebecca Joanne Grummon of Springfield; son, Stephen (wife, Corrie) Grummon of Springfield, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, First United Methodist Church, Springfield, Dr. Roger K. Rominger officiating. Private family interment: Stout Cemetery.

Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
