Claude Emerson Gebhart, 68, of Lewisburg, died Thursday, Dec. 26, at Heartland of Eaton.

Born Aug. 28, 1934, in West Sonora, he was the son of the late David and Alice E. (Shiverdecker) Gephart (sic; Gebhart). He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1956-1958. Mr. Gebhart retired in 1996 from Miami Valley International in Vandalia after 20 years of service.

From 1966 to 1976, he served as the fire chief and was a member of the Lewisburg Fire Department, and helped organize the Lewisburg Emergency Unit. He was a founding member of the Civitan Group.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David E. "Gene" Gebhart, in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carol Jean (Locke) Gebhart [m. December 30, 1955, Preble County, Ohio]; sons and daughter-in-law, Todd E. and Rhonda L. Gebhart of Lewisburg, Scott M. and Michelle L. Gebhart of Eaton; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki J. and David Fryman of Union; a sister-in-law, Marie (Focht) Gebhart of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Katelynn and Cynthia Fryman, Ryan and Kyle Gebhart, and Jessica Gebhart; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 30, at Barnes Funeral home-Lewisburg Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Pratt officiating. Burial, with full military services by the Preble County Honor Guard, was in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg.
