Robert C. Schumacher, 87, of Charleston passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. He was born on February 18, 1924, to the late Edward and Ethel Frank Schumacher in Newport, Ky. Robert was retired from the State of West Virginia as a field representative. He was a member of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston. Robert was a U.S. Army, Combat Engineer Battalion, World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a graduate of Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward `Bud` (Loretta) and Lawrence (Georgia); sisters, Alberta Frede (Ralph) and Ruth `Mick` Schumacher; brothers-in-law, Robert J. Bertke and William F. Bertke. He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Bertke Schumacher; sons, Robert L. (April) of Princeton, Stephen W. (Debbie) of Charleston, David E. (Patsy) of Charleston, Paul J. of Morgantown, Michael G. of Columbus, and James G. of Charleston; daughters, Lynne Hay (Joseph) of Souderton, Pa., and Lisa J. Schumacher of Orefield, Pa.; sister, Mary E. Schumacher of Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Bernette `Toots` (George) Hager, Mildred Bertke and Marge Bertke; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and aides at Thomas Memorial Hospital and the caring staff at Hubbard Hospice House. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. The family suggests donations may be made to the Sacred Heart needy student fund, Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1032 Virginia St. E., Charleston, WV 25301, or Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.
