In 1907 Hugh's mother passed away, and he went to live with his paternal grandparents on their farm off Queen's Mill Road in the Howell's District of Cobb County, Georgia. The 1910 census has him helping with the farm work. By 1917 when he registered for the WWI draft, he had moved to Cedartown, Polk, Georgia, and was working as foreman on construction lines for Western Union Telegraph. He was described as a man of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair.
He met and married Kizzie Dunwoody. By 1930 the family was living at 1411 Desoto Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia. He still was working as a lineman for the telegraph company. They had one child, Kathryn.
By 1935 the family had moved to 7604 N.W. 4th Court, Miami, Dade, Florida. Hugh still worked as a lineman for Western Union.
Hugh died while visiting Hot Springs, North Carolina. The death certificate lists his residence as 7604 N.W. 4th Court, Miami, Florida. It also lists the cemetery as Southern Memorial in Miami, Florida.
