Mr. Smith died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday at Murray-Calloway County Hospital Long Term Care.
A native of Creal Springs, Ill., he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a surgical technician in the 69th Division from 1942 to 1946. He received his doctorate from Southern Illinois University in 1967. He was a professor in the biology department, and served as Pre-Medical Advisor from 1969 to 1991 at Murray State University, where he was honored as Distinguished Professor in 1989. He taught at the former Paducah Junior College from 1953 to 1969. He was a former member of Fountain Avenue United Methodist Church in Paducah. Mr. Smith coached baseball and softball in Paducah and Murray.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Smith; one daughter, Stacy L. Jones of Pennsylvania; one son, Dr. Mikel D. Smith of Lexington; one sister, Lorraine Cook of Manteno, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Ellen Smith and Ben Smith, both of Lexington, and Jennie Jones of Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. His parents were Henry Smith and Nora Martin Smith.
