Rinda Jane Townley was the second of six children born to both Elizabeth Hayes and Thomas Pinkney Townley. By her 10th birthday she had become the big sister to two sisters and two more brothers. Her mother died in 1870 and her father married a woman with the last name Robinson. That marriage produced only one son, Rinda's step-brother, LeRoy P who was said to have succumbed to a mule kick at the age of 14 or so. Rinda's step-mother died and her father subsequently married (m. circa 1876) her second step-mother, Amanda Austin who was only 12 years older than Rinda.
Amanda and T P had six more children, four girls and two boys. Rinda continued to live in her childhood home with her father and step-mother and siblings Mary, Elbert, Reese, Bertha Mae, Rubie, and Maude and a live in servant, Sallie Wilson. It is 1900, Rinda is 40 years old and has never lived away from home. During the next year Rinda marries a widower, James Whitworth, 17 years her senior, with children at home. She goes from being the step-daughter to the role of step-mother. Two years later her only biological child Alta is born. In 1910 Alta is 7 and Rinda still has two step-daughters (Lillie age 30 and Missie age 27) at home. When J B is 77, Rinda is 60 years old and her daughter is 17 and going to school. There are only the three of them living in the home.
