Miss Helen was born in Chicago IL, she moved to Muskegon as a child and attended Muskegon Heights Public Schools, after recieving her G.E.D., she went on to earn an Associates Degree in Education from Muskegon Community Collage.Miss Helen was employed by Whitehall District Schools. Knowing how important education was and how it could unlock many doors, she was inspired to pursue a position on the Whitehall Board of Education, during her 18 years of service, she eventually became President of the Whitehall Board of Education, she held that office for 13 years until her health prevented her from continueing. On May 12, 1999, she was honored when the Whitehall Board of Education renamed Whitehall Elementary School to the Helen R. Ealy Elementary School. Miss Helen was also involved in the creation of Little Blue Lake Cooperative a housing project for low income families and the White Lake Commitee for Interracial Communication and Understanding and was Vice-President of Helping Hands Neighborhood Association and tutored many neighborhood children. Miss Helen was preceded in death by her husband Emitt and a son Darrell Reed.
