Clinton was born and raised near Sand Mountain in Dade County, MO to Jonathan Arthur and Mamie Adelia (Carlock) McConnell.

He married Dorothy Marie Feezell July 20, 1933 in the home of his parents. In this union, 6 children were born. The first born were twins, Donald Cletis and Dorothy Cleo in a log cabin. Followed by Lola Christine, Carolyn Sue, Gertie Lou and Cathy Elaine.

He served on the Sand Mountain school board several terms.

He and Dorothy owned a rural country store in Sand Mountain for several years. It was Dade Counties first convenience store. He was a widely known and sought after builder/carpenter. It is said he built half of Dade County and remodeled the other half. And he even built amusement park rides for the family to enjoy.

In his retirement years, he liked to sit in his easy chair or out on the swing and poke the pet dogs with his cane.

Referring to a large gathering at a family reunion, Grandpa Clinton was overheard saying, "All this wouldn't have happened had I not swam the river."
