Stephen Bennett Carroll was the oldest of five sons born to Seymor Douglas 'Dee' Carroll and Julia Ann Akin Carroll. Younger brothers Charley and Eli were twins, and like the second born son Joseph, all lived and raised their families in Dyer County, Tennessee, staying near their parents and grandparents, Solomon Douglas and Elizabeth Vannoy Carroll.

Stephen Carroll came to Texas in the late 1890's and settled in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas with his youngest brother Abner Franklin Carroll(FAG#19588352). Stephen died in 1903 leaving Frank and their Aunt Palymyra Akin Thedford(FAG#78298495) and her husband John Thedford as the only Tennessee connection and kin to Stephens widow (Martha Jane Marley Carroll FAG#92969745) and four children.

Stephen died in 1903 of throat cancer as documented by his youngest daughter Mary Ella who was born in 1902, the year before his death. He was a farmer, and not long after his death, his wife, Martha Jane Marley Carroll and four children left Cleburne for Borden County.

Stephen's children proudly carried the Carroll name into West Texas and New Mexico where his descendants live today. Daughters Estella and Mary Ella married Pittman brothers from Grandfalls, Ward County, and son Othello farmed/ranched and raised his family in Crosby County and later in Roswell, New Mexico. His five Carroll sons have passed the Carroll name on to the next generation. Stephen's daughter Estella named her youngest son Willard Carroll Pittman.

Bio by: Sandra Sue Pittman McPeak, daughter of Willard Carroll Pittman, great granddaughter of Stephen Bennett Carroll.
