Armentus W. Bixby learned the blacksmith's trade at Claremont, N. H., and there became acquainted with his wife. In the spring of 1835 he removed to Shalersville, Ohio. They traveled the entire distance, nearly seven hundred miles, with a team of three horses and a lumber wagon, in which he carried his wife and three children and his household goods. He located on a farm and became an active man in the affairs of the community. He was sheriff and captain of a militia company at the time of his death.
He and his wife died of typhoid fever in 1841, one at night the other one day later, both were buried in the same grave. Grave location is unknown, believed to be in Shalerville Township, Ohio. Armentus' brothers came from Vermont and took the children to be raised by Bixby family members in MT. Holly, Vermont.
