GUM AND GOVERNMENT.
Auckland Star, Volume XIX, Issue 97, 25 April 1888, Page 4

John Joseph Francis Marie Grace, a debtor under examination by the Official Assignee to-day, deposed that during the last 14 or 15 years he had followed the calling of schoolmaster and insurance canvasser. He had to file a petition of insolvency in 1878, and from that time until 1880 he considered that he had paid his way. In that year he had a severe illness in his family, caused by a native chief named Homari Kiugi frightening Mrs Grace. That entailed great expense. Witness understood that he was to be compensated by the Government and therefore waived his right of action against the native. At this time his income was from £80 to £140 per annum, he being native schoolmaster. Owing to extra expense of living his income proved insufficient, and as a consequence he got into arrears. The debtor had no regular employment, his average earnings for the last three months, not being more than 30s per week. His debts were £312 16s 3d, and his sole assets about £10 worth of furniture.
